7.3 wont start

hi guys pulled a 7.3 out of a wrecked truck(but before i did started it and drove truck 4 times around lot over a week ) then pulled motor and installed in different truck , it wont fire up now , 1 got wait to start light , 2 tach moves to about 300 rpm when cranking , 3 got smoke coming out exhaust pipe , 4 , will run on wd 40 if sprayed in intake , swapped over idm and ecm from wrecked truck, even tryed orignal

idm and ecm from truck i put motor in , cranking great , changed oil and filter, swapped out cps from old motor , put the one from wrecked motor back incause it worked 2 days ago , and tach moved with either one , we are about 40 degrees out , have great fuel pressure coming to fuel filter housing , dont want to hang parts ,anyone got any ideas what i should check next to get this thing up and running any help would

be great , is there any way to test the hpop

Check the HPOP reservoit.  Pull the pipe plug out and put small stick or tie rap in hole.  Oil should be no lower than 1 inch from top.  Use 1/4 ratchet to remove pipe plug with no extentsion.   I used extenstion instead of removing a couple things to get the ratchet in there and stripped mine.

If you have smok that means you must have fuel which means you must have high pressure oil.

What color is the smoke?  If it is blue/black it is oil not fuel.  Smoke should be grey/white for fuel.

When you turn the key on the voltage light should drop drastically, something like 9 volts.  IF the voltage drops a little could be glow plug/plugs not working.

Plug the block heater in and charge your batteries right up.

Even in tempertures of 90 the glow plugs have to work on these engines or they will not start.  

I know I tired of days when I bought my truck, turned out burnt out realy, brand new truck in 95 with super extended bumper to bumper warranty, NO Warranty.  Got to like Ford dealerships!

Ford put 3 relays on my truck in 4 months when I bought it with $3000 optional super warranty - No warranty.  The mechanics response "Sorry Buddy only the pistons and the block are covered, we fucked you good"

 

I bought my own relay $40 CADat a parts store and put it on myself.  Never went back to Ford and will never go back to Ford.

I had a 83 Ford F250 6.9 once upon a time.

I had to carry two new spin-on fuel filters with me at all times.

You would be drving and all of the sudden she would belch out thick white smoke and die.

Water in the tank.  Spin off the fuel filter and spin on the new filter, she would start and go instantly.

 

So if the smoke is thick white, not grey you could have water in your fuel tank.  If there is water she won't start.

 

Just because the waite to start light works doesn't mean your glow plug system is working.  When my Ford relays installed by Ford Master mechanics were disintegrating, my waite to start light was still working.  Unfortunetly there were 3 burnt out glow plugs which was possibly the cause which also burnt out my injection  harness.  I fixed it myself.  Eventually I had to buy new injection harnesses.  I bought Doorman from Rockauto with the valve cover gaskets $45 CAD.  

 

One other thing to check.  I was driving on the highway one day and my truck started to die, like it was running out of fuel.  So I switched tanks.  Things were good.

I pulled my rear tank off, turned out the fuel pickup unit rotted at the elbows just above the tank, so she started sucking air.

 

Up here my tanks seem to have a life span of 9 years.  The fuel pickup units about 18 years.  They are made out of stainless steel so I'm not sure why they rott.
